The interest rate that is charged by a country’s central or federal bank on loans and advances controls the money supply in the economy and the banking sector. The associated interest rate can be impacted by the central bank monetary policy. Central Asia, despite a lack of countries over the 20% threshold, is still home to the highest interest rates in the world on average, with Sub-Saharan Africa second and South America third. In Central Asia, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan lead the region with 15% interest rates in both countries.
