The standoff over Libya’s main source of income has threatened to cripple the already battered economy and deprive the country of fuel supplies. Libya has the largest proven oil reserves in Africa. Oil reserves in Libya are the largest in Africa and among the ten largest globally with 46.4 billion barrels (7.38 × 109 m 3) as of 2010. Oil production was 1.65 million barrels per day (262 × 103 m 3 /d) as of 2010, giving Libya 77 years of reserves at current production rates if no new reserves were to be found. Libya’s proven oil reserves represent a large part of Africa’s total reserves and about 3 percent of the world’s total reserves. Libyan crude oil is low in sulfur content and therefore causes less corrosion and less pollution than most crude oils, which has made it popular in countries that have imposed stringent emissions standards. The deposits are associated with natural gas. Libya has the largest proven reserves of oil in Africa, and has been a key supplier of light, sweet crude to Europe. Around 1970 it produced more than 3 million bpd, and before the NATO-backed uprising in which Muammar Gaddafi was toppled and killed seven years ago, it was pumping more than 1.6 million bpd. Libya has Africa’s largest proven oil reserves and is also a player in the natural gas market. That alone would be enough to make people pay attention to the country’s political situation. But Libya’s story is much more complicated—and instructive—than its impact on energy markets.
