The interest rate targeted by the Federal Reserve, the range of the federal funds rate, is currently 1.0% to 1.25%. That’s after the Fed cut it half of a percentage point on March 3, 2020. When a depository institution has surplus balances in its reserve account, it lends to other banks in need of larger balances. Commonly known as the Fed Funds Rate, the Federal Funds Rate is a short-term rate objective or “Target Rate” of the Federal Reserve Board. Also known as the Intended Federal Funds Rate, it can be expressed as a specific rate or as a range of rates. The CVFR percentage is based on the investment rates for the Treasury Tax and Loan (TT&L) accounts set for purposes of Public Law 95-147, 91 Stat. As of March 1, 2016, the daily effective federal funds rate (EFFR) is a volume-weighted median of transaction-level data collected from depository institutions in the Report of Selected Money Market Rates (FR 2420). Prior to March 1, 2016, the EFFR was a volume-weighted mean of rates on brokered trades. When reference is made to the US interest rate this often refers to the Federal Funds Rate. The Federal Funds Rate is the interest rate which banks charge one another for 1 day (overnight) lending. This American base rate is set by the market and is not explicitly laid down by the FED.
